FDA Approved cloned meats! Did we forget Dolly?
This News will affect you weather you are dieting or not. I think it affects all consumers, so I saw it fit to post here.
The FDA approved cloned meat and deem it safe for eating today. The Food and Drug Administration has hesitated for several years to approve commercial sales to companies that have been researching and developing cloned meat. Last year, in 2007 these companies have been compiling evidence to support the case that cloned meat is safe to eat.
While the genetics can be different with cloned and natural-born animals, the cloning companies argue that the meat from these animals have no major differences and are safe to eat.
Because of the high cost too cloning it will probably be years before this meat or milk will be on our grocery shelf, but it is of great concern to many consumers and protection groups are leery.
The FDA notes that it is unlikely that the meat and milk from cloned animals will be available for sale in any significant amount; instead, it will likely come from the offspring of those animals. That’s because clones would be used for breeding, while their sexually reproduced offspring would be used for producing meat and milk for the consumer.
The FDA notes that the food from the clone meats will not require special labeling because they are just as safe to eat as the natural born animals.
As a consumer I think that since cloning is not a natural process of conception we should be allowed to choice between eating the cloned animal or the natural-born animal.
In 1996 the first cloned mammal Dolly the sheep, was born, she died six years later. The life expectancy of sheep can be 11-12 years, Dolly died of a lung infection commonly seen in much older sheep.
I love meat and I am by no means an activist of any kind, but this news has upset me so much.
I would love to hear you thoughts on this, please leave a comment if you like.

This really is disturbing and similar to the genetically altered food feasco.
The issue isn’t whether or not it is safe, the issue is whether or not the have a right to take away our right to know and to decide for ourselves what we want to eat and feed our children.
It’s scary stuff and there is more and more of it every day in regards to our food choices.
Thanks for the articles, very interesting – and good to know!
This is my point exactly! Why take away our choices.
Wow. I have to agree that I would be very leary of eating cloned meat. Where do we even begin? There’s the science of life that is baffling to say the least. There is the moral delimma of creating life through man’s inventions. It’s not our place. Finally, side effects could take years to develop before we even realize the source of new aliments. I think it is essential that we are made aware of the origins of our meat.
This is pretty scary stuff. I’m already a vegetarian. Guess I’ll have to think about going vegan!
The FDA most obviously do not understand the issue and implications.
Please consider why some cloned animals still come out looking like the were extras in the movie “The Fly”? Researchers still don’t know why that happens. But hell it’s safe, cause you say so.
And please address what happens 10-30 years ago when we are no longer cloning “originals”. When the DNA is diluted.
And last; please address why we need more food? You starving? Or do you in your infinite wisdom think that we are going to export some rib eye to Africa and end hunger? Are we doing this so that farmers can produce more, cheaper and make more money. Not the goal I wanted to risk my kids welfare for.
I agree, it just does not make any sense to me.
“The FDA notes that the food from the clone meats will not require special labeling because they are just as safe to eat as the natural born animals.”…..I’m not surprised from what I’ve learned by researching different articles re: food additives/chemicals/ingredients that are unhealthy but allowed to be used in processed food.
It’s one thing if cloned meat will be sold as long as it is labeled as such so that people can choose what they are buying…..quite upsetting.
[...] learned of this topic in a blog post today, what do you think about the whole thing? Do you think cloned meat is fine to eat and no more [...]
Dolly died early because she was cloned from a 6 year old sheep and so her DNA was as deteriorated as when she was 6. So tchnically, she died at the expected age
Frank not according to the bbc, but I will check out this new info : )

Just to leave this subject open and unbiased the reason why most consumers are unwilling to eat “cloned” meat is because of what has been done to the meat itself. But what about the meat we eat now? Clearly, their are hormones and other chemicals that are given to the very animal’s that we eat. Obviously, clones are not organic but what about the offspring of that clone? It has been proven through Dolly the Sheep that the clones are capable of reproduction. Finally, above all reasons, what about long term, when mankind itself is stripped the luxury of deciding what to eat. I am sure that if you feed third world countries cloned meat they would eat it hands down. The human population is growing drastically that in time we will hit a point where it will be impossible to breed animals at the pace humans are breeding. My personal opinion, is if you intend to sell cloned meat to the public at least give the consumer numbers and the facts and not just the FDA stamp.
well said!
